bows and ruffles and bored

I was feeling totally uninspired today, and I think it shows. Nonetheless, here's my "blah" OOTD:

xhilaration white ruffle tank, target
houndstooth bow button cardigan, j.crew
denim, joe's jeans
platform heels, gojane

I love the bow cardigan, which I got from Tippy's "shop my closet" blog a while back, but sometimes I am totally baffled as to what to pair it with. Just now, I'm thinking that its cropped length may make it a super cute layering option for dresses and skirts. Hmmm. I'll have to try that out when I get home.

Anyway - I got to perusing J.Crew's new arrivals today and am overall a bit disappointed. It's all looking a bit "ho hum, haven't I seen that before?" Where's the fresh and fun J.Crew I fell in love with during college? But that's not to say that the Crew didn't have at least a few things I'm coveting:

The 'Belstaff Liss blazer.' I'm not a leather jacket kind of girl, but I must admit that this one caught my eye. I like the way it's cut for a more feminine figure while still retaining some of that motorcycle jacket edginess. But for $1,395.00 (actual figures!), I think I'll just keep on admiring this from a distance.

The 'Degradé Seraphina dress.' The draping and pleating on this floaty little frock is absolutely gorgeous. And that subtle ombre effect? I love it. I can imagine a Grecian goddess wearing this with little gold sandals and traipsing around Olympus doing whatever it is that Grecian goddesses do.

There isn't any piece in this outfit that I particularly want, but I know that I do love the styling J.Crew did here. I love the idea of a fun skirt paired with a casual button-up, tie, and cardigan. You better believe that I'm going to try to pull off my own version of this look. Sometimes J.Crew does styling oh-so-right.

...and then sometimes J.Crew does styling oh-so-what-the-heck-is-this? Gray ankle socks, bright purple pencil skirt, grayish heels, grayish t-shirt... Somehow the Crew managed to make an outfit that's simultaneously hilarious and boring. For the record, the skirt itself (the 'Super 120s high pencil skirt') is extremely beautiful - I saw it on an SA at the store and instantly loved it. It's how it's presented here that I have an issue with.

Is there anything that you've been coveting from J.Crew lately?

  2. I'm not digging anything @ jcrew right now. I got my contessa dress and that will do me for a while. Good for my wallet.

That last look would be perfectly fine (albeit a little mundane) if she was wearing grey fishnet tights instead of anklets. I really hate that trend. Socks with heels conjures up visions of bag ladies and fat American tourists in my mind. :P

  4. First, your outfit is cute, and love the girly bow cardi with the hardcore-looking sandals!
Second, haven't had a chance to explore all the JCrew newbies, but I did pre-order a new pencil skirt that just looks so cheerful, can't wait till it gets here!
You're right, back in the day (2-3 years ago)JCrew felt so classic and now, it's a little too much on the edge...just my thoughts

  5. I like your outfit! That sweater looks great with the tank. I found that some of the new arrivals aren't totally thrilling, but the variety of colors (finally!) has me excited.

  6. Love that top/cardi combo...and the pants & shoes also. :) I agree that the cardi would look great over a dress or skirt! I haven't been to J. Crew in quite a while actually, but I would gladly take that Seraphina dress & leather jacket.

  7. I actually like that outfit, it's casual without being plain. As far as jcrew is concerned, I LOVE the seraphina dress but can't hold up a strapless dress to save my life, especially one that doesnt come in petite sizing :(
Other jcrew items i'm coveting are the sunshine peony pencil skirt, the chiffon forget-me-not cardigan and the scalloped zipper cardigan, which seems to be sold out online but i'm determined to track down!

  10. your outfit is so cute! not at all boring. i have a jcrew sweater i bought a couple months ago and have the same issue...it's a black cardigan with a chiffon tuxedo ruffle down the front (rosa has it in white w/black). it's so cute but i'm having the hardest time pairing something underneath it. it's so frustrating. and yes, jcrew's spring line is disappointing. except i did buy the lilac sleeveless top that has the funky floral the neck. super cute on and the color is amazing!
