sweater vested

Work is kicking my butt, readers, but I'm sneaking in a post during my lunch break. I can't wait to move closer to my job - the extra hour my lessened commute will give me will be much, much appreciated!

This look was centered around my desire to wear this neon orange belt. I used to wear it with everything when I first got it (because really, what doesn't go with traffic-cone orange?) (don't answer that), but it had unfortunately fallen into Closet Oblivion lately, so I decided to finally dig it out again.

striped shirt, gap [x]
sweater vest, j.crew outlet (circa 2008)
denim, joe's jeans
metallic 'liv' flats, j.crew
neon leather belt, j.crew
locket, lucky brand

How do you decide what to wear, readers? Do you base your decisions off of the desire to wear one specific piece (a belt, a shirt, a hat, etc) like I do or is there more method to your sartorial choices?

Also, I completely forgot to thank Tara B. from Little Girl Big Closet for letting me do a guest post last week! It was a lot of fun, and you can check it out HERE. Don't forget to look at the rest of her blog, she has some fun fashion sense and a sharp sense of humor to boot!

Finally, I need some advice. I've run out of my stock of face wash and have decided that it's time for a change of pace. I've been using Mary Kay's Timewise face wash for the past 3 years and I want to move on. It's just not working the wonders on my skin like it used to. What I'm saying is, HELP ME PICK A NEW FACE WASH! I have sensitive skin that's prone to extreme dryness and extreme oiliness. If any of you readers have the same issues and have found your holy grail of face washes, pray tell!

  1. I used to be one of those people who would buy a different face wash every time I needed more, but I have found a new favorite and have been using it now for about 5 years (that's a big deal for me!) I also have sensitive skin that is dry in places (forehead and chin) and oily in others (cheeks and nose). Anyway, here's the brand I use: Collective Wellbeing Cleansing Cream. They sell it at Whole Foods or other similar stores. They also have a cleansing gel, paste, clay, and exfoliants. I personally like the natural cleansers best since they don't aggravate my skin w/chemicals. This is hands-down my favorite.

  2. I'm newish follower, but I love your style!

For a face wash rec, I'm also prone to dryness and I love Purity by Philosophy (as well their Hope in a Jar moisturizer). Super gentle and really seems to take off my make up (read: gel eyeliner) without having to scrub.

  3. Um, super-cute outfit and must say that the orange belt just sets the whole thing off!! I base outfits on weather, on wearing something new I just got (which happens more frequently than I'd like to admit) or guilty feelings that I haven't worn a certain piece in a long time. Such an emotional process I realize!
As for the face wash, I can't stick to one product that I can honsetly say does wonders, that is why I hop around and try different things, but there's no real logic to that!! Look forward to see what you pick out!

  6. Honestly, I have tried a zillion face washes and prefer Artistry Hydrating Cleanser, Toner & Lotion (moisturizer). They are the only things that have cleared up my skin while keeping it hydrated. If you'd like to check out my site: http://tklugman.qbeautyzone.com/. It's worth a shot - if you don't like it you have a 6 month money-back guarantee (even if the product is used)!!!

  7. I like today's outfit - casual but still buttoned-up (ha ha), and that orange belt really sets everything off.
I'm eternally on the search for the perfect face wash too - keep us in the loop if you find anything awesome!

  8. Amy,

I really love handmade bar soap face wash - I never would have believed someone if they told me how awesome they are, but it is true! My skin is also dry but oily at the same time... it was once super dry due to accutane but is better now, thank goodness.

My favorite seller is a girl named Lauren under the shop name DressGreen on Etsy. Her stuff is free of a lot of the artificial ingredients in many commercial products. I also have another girl I purchase soaps from although I can't think of the shop name off the top of my head... I can look up the exact products I use if you'd like to know :).

    good luck choosing something!

  9. Pear's Soap Bar...you can find it at Rite Aid. Not harsh and cheap. I use it for face and body. Try it!

  12. Cheers to a shorter commute! I'm hoping to get another walking/biking distance job... man, was I spoiled with my previous gig (well, 2 gigs ago, actually).

I've used neutrogena rapid clear foaming cleanser for years. I have slightly sensitive + combo skin, but no major issues or breakouts. I've been meaning to try Yes to Carrot's skin care (which is ordered by carrots, cucumber and tomatoes, according to skin type) b/c I really like their shampoo and lip gloss, but I haven't yet. I'll let you know when I do!

  13. I often style an outfit around one accessory because I am accessory obsessed! LOVE the belted cardi look!

  14. I love your look today! And...everything goes with traffic orange (just so you know!) For me, I usually pick out one item that is really calling my name and then center the rest of my outfit around that piece. Sometimes it's a belt, sometimes shoes, sometimes a blouse. And sometimes I know comfort reins and then I dress accordingly as well. I really do decide spur of the moment in the morning. I've tried planning outfits before, but it just stresses me our (and where is the fun in that???)

  15. Extra *hour*?! Your workplace sounds way too far away--glad to know you are moving closer. I love how you built your outfit around the orange belt (which is a great one, btw)--I usually try to have some idea of what I want to wear before I go to bed or else I end up spending way too much time in the morning figuring it out. I don't think I have ever started with an accessory though, as I am still an accessorizing newbie. Maybe I will give that a try and see what happens!

  16. I love the orange belt. I can see how it goes with so many things.

There's no strategy behind what I choose to wear...I just throw on what feels right. If I think about an outfit too much I end up hating it by the end of the day.

  17. i usually pick my outfits by what color i feel like wearing....then by style either dressy or casual and add pieces from there! ocassionally i'll build an outfit around shoes which is always fun :0) also cetaphil is AMAZING face wash and i have skin like yours...i love L♥VE love it and have been using it for years!! hope this helps you, have a great night :0)

  19. i hate commutes, too. thankfully, with my job now, I have 15 minutes WITH traffic.

I use Bliss Fabulous Foaming Face Wash in the shower daily! I have combination skin that is dry right now but gets oily in summer. I also tend to break out at the slightest thing and have found this Bliss wash to be great! No irritation, no break outs, etc. At night I use Aveda Tourmaline wash. It's more exfoliating. But I swear by both of them!!

  20. I second the Cetaphil Gentle Cleanser! It's so kind to your skin and gets the job done without any added hoopla.

  21. Ooh, I am loving your look. Give me a vest and a belt and I'm a happy camper. I use cetaphil and it's been pretty good to me!

  22. sorry i'm late on my reply! but i definitely agree with those who mentioned cetaphil gentle cleanser (not the daily cleanser...has to be the gentle one). i have extremely sensitive skin and this is the best thing i have EVER found for my face. works wonders i promise!

  23. I was so obsessed with all of the neon that J. Crew did last season!! I wanted the pink version of this belt but never got it fearing that I wouldn't wear it. Now I so wish I had! I love how you paired it with a simple outfit here to make it pop.

  24. OH and as far as facewashes go--I really like philosophy's purity made simple if you're willing to shell out for it. It is very gentle and hasn't upset my sensitive skin in the 3 years I've been using it. The only thing is that it gets pricey.
