trendwatch saturday: maps

I'm a sucker for maps. I couldn't tell you why, except that I have a suspicion that I may have been a grizzled old cartographer in a past life. So this week's installment will feature MAPS! Or rather, map print items (and well, a map also).

The 'Cartography' cardigan from Anthropologie, $98:

I have yet to see this piece in person, but the print is just darling! I especially love Old World-style maps, and I also am somewhat of a cardigan fiend, so having the two marry one another to produce this is heaven! The price is a bit steep though, so I'll be stalking this one until it goes on sale.

The 'large handbag' by Alviero Martini:

I read somewhere that these map-print bags were all the rage in the early 90s. I must have missed that, but then again, I can't say that I was very much into handbags during my middle school years. Well, 90s throwback or no, I love these. I want one to come out in an oversized tote format, similar to the Louis Vuitton 'Neverfull' shape. I'm waaaaaiting, Mr. Martini!

The 'World Map Wall Mural' from Urban Outfitters, $140:

Having this colorful map take up an entire wall is a little over-the-top, but I can't help kind of liking the idea. My ideal apartment "artwork" would be several framed maps of different places, with an Old World map being the biggest one. Time will tell if that'll come to fruition!

So now you all know that I love a good map design. Are there any "unusual" designs that you lovely readers gravitate towards?

  1. My mom definitely had a few of those handbags back in the 90s.. she did keep them so maybe she can pass them on to me? ;)

Also I love the Cartography cardigan but the fit was way off for me. It runs really small but when I sized up it didn't look right. Oh well!

  4. That cardi is beautiful, why haven't I noticed it before?

If you're in love with those Alviero Martini map purses, they do offer a range of different totes with the same pattern, just go to www.forzieri.com/usa/. I think they've got over 100 styles of his bag, but they are kind of pricey.

  5. I adore map print everything! My girlfriend has this cardi and I am always so jealous when she wears it.

I have been wishing and hoping to find a map print (real or fake, whatever!) thrifting, but have yet to come across one.

  6. I love maps too...over the years I have found antique ones to frame around my home.
Currently I have a survey of NYC from the early 1900's framed in my upstairs hallway.
See, I knew we were kindred spirits!

  7. So random, I actually saw a $15 map print purse this afternoon while at an antique shop (even though it's probably from the '90s or early '00s). I didn't get b/c the shape of the bag wasn't doing it for me, but the print was cool.

  9. Ah I remember the map bags from the 90s! And when I got my cartography cardigan via charge send yesterday, I immediately got pangs of nostalgia for the bags. I tracked one down on ebay and am excited to blog about both of them.

Would it be ok if I link you/this post when I do it, since you blogged about this so much earlier?
