a hilltop picnic

The last time that I layered a skirt under a too-short dress worked out so well, I decided to try it again. With the same skirt. I have yet to wear this skirt on its own (due to a lack of the perfect brown belt to go with it), but it's already ventured out of the closet twice now thanks to how great it looks under some of my more hemline-challenged frocks.

I've worn this dress a few times without feeling like it was too short, but today, for whatever reason, I just decided that it was. Too short, I mean. So I popped the white eyelet skirt under it and voilĂ ! Instant length. I'm thinking that this trick works best with full skirts because I'm hard-pressed to think of how it might be successfully executed with something like a pencil skirt or a mini. Feel free to prove me wrong, though!

For those of you who were bummed that my particular skirt is sold out on the Modcloth site, I have a surprise for you: CLICK HERE. This is literally THE EXACT SAME SKIRT being sold on Alloy aka The Poor Man's Delias. And for half the price of what I paid! Lucky, lucky you! I admit that I'm a little peeved that I paid $60 for mine when I could've gotten it for $29.90, but eh. Now I know that Modcloth hikes up their prices like no other and will have to shop around the next time my mouse-clickin' finger's feeling itchy over there. YOU'RE WELCOME. Haha...

For reference, I ordered a size Medium and it fits wonderfully. I have a 28" waist.

calico dress, thrifted
green cardigan, gap [x-ish]
can't believe my eyelet skirt, modcloth [x] [x]
village slingback sandal, mia [x]
skinny brown belt, urban outfitters
red evil eye bracelet, kiosk
elephant ring, f21
leaf wrap ring, outdoor market

Well, TGIF, you guys! Happy weekending! I'll see you all bright and early on Monday morning...

  3. Sorry, Amy, but I went to the link first before reading through the rest of your post - ha ha. It's like the perfect white skirt for summer. I love the green cardi too - you're all summer-y today.

Yeah, I don't often order from Modcloth bc I often see the exact same thing on LuLus or F21 for waaaaay cheaper. But I do like Modcloth in general though bc they're so supportive of the blog community.

  4. I hate when stores jack up prices and I've noticed that MC does it a lot. Anthro does that too and sometimes I notice it on places like Zappos (only by a few dollars usually, and probably to subsidize their fast shipping, but I still get annoyed).

  7. Very cute!! I never thought about the skirt giving length to the dress! That's a neat idea! And the cardi is very bright! I love it! I can just feel summer coming! :)

  8. :) You look so cute! I abhor ordering from Modcloth because I know I'm paying a 70% markup (or more, 70% is their employee discount I believe so that should tell you something) half the time which drives me UP THE WALL. And I can tell when the clothes come from the quality which always makes me frown too. So I have to really love something and not be able to find it anywhere else to put in an order! However, that skirt is also a pretty good replica of the Anthropologie/Anna Sui Airy Eyelet skirt which retailed for like $170, so think of yourself as having gotten a good deal either way ;)

  15. I love this outfit. I almost bought the skirt, but then remembered I want the In A Twinkling Dress, which is just a matter of time now before I pull the trigger and get. I even went as far as checking out, but then I saw the $38 and said na. Plus, I have some cashmere sweaters to return because I ordered them out impulse.

Don't you just hate it when cashmere goes on sale, and you're like, gimme, gimme, gimme, and once it arrives, you look at it, and say, "wtf was I thinking?" Boo. At least I got free shipping.

    Have a great weekend, Amy!

  18. Very resourceful on the skirt layering! I agree that it works best with fuller skirts, and the one you choose also adds personality to your outfit (though it would still have personality without it, just less) which is great. You have a great collection of colored cardigans – I need to get myself some more!

  19. Looking cute as always! You're a genius at layering and so bold with the skirt underneath the dress. If I tried, it would look like I was confused or something, unable to decide if I wanted to go for the skirt or the dress, so I wore both!!
I'm checking out as we speak on that eyelet skirt so thank you thank you for the link!

  24. Don't mind me catching up!

I love the layered skirt trick. I'm going to have to get myself a base layer skirt to do the same. I don't know what it is about hemlines, but I randomly decide that skirts are too short too!
