borrowed from my brother

I'm taking a cue from J.Crew's "borrowed from my brother" theme on Crewcuts and uh, borrowing something from my brother.

Speaking of Crewcuts, am I the only person who is ridiculously jealous of how adorable children's clothing is? Seriously, I wish J.Crew would make grown-up sizes of some of the Girl's items. Sigh. And kids can wear anything and look freakin' amazing. I mean, look at this:

On her: so adorable that I half expect rainbows to shoot out from behind her. On an adult: could potentially make you look criminally insane.

But that doesn't mean an adult couldn't pull off the same elements of this look to make it work in, you know, Adult World (nevermind that that sounds like a sketchy video place). Say, open up the collar of the chambray shirt and extend the bow tie with some silver chains to make it into a bow tie necklace. Then swap the tutu-looking skirt for a full white eyelet or accordion-pleated skirt. Change the shoes to "grown-up" flats, sans strap. Replace the brown leather belt with a wider one. BAM. Grown-up version of this adorable kid's ensemble.

I may entertain the idea of taking Crewcuts looks and making my own "grown-up" versions of them. Anyone on board?

But I do occasionally buy from the Crewcuts line. I'm pretty small on top, so sometimes I can manage to squeeze into their sweaters and tees, which makes me happy, because the girls have awesome sweaters and tees! Here's a purchase that's making it way to me right now:

I love how it's a literal zebra print. So fun! I hope it fits! -crosses fingers-

Wait, so where was I before going off on a Crewcuts tangent? Oh yes, borrowing from my brother. Can you tell what I borrowed?

white cami, cotton on
striped blue shirt, brother's
pleated pencil skirt, anthropologie
wide belt, calvin klein
joley flats, j.crew
faceted glacon bracelet, j.crew [x]

That's right, I borrowed the skirt! Just kidding... it's the shirt, of course! This was part of his old middle school uniform and I snagged it when he outgrew it and my mom was considering tossing it out. Hooray for reusing! I have to admit that me mooching off my brother's clothes is a one-way kind of deal, though. I mean, sure I can shop his closet, but he can't exactly shop mine.

At least, I hope not. He'd look terrible in a pencil skirt.

Happy weekending, everyone!

  2. Hahaha you are high-larious! And yeah omg, crewcuts has the cutest tees and cardis for girls, and now they've introduced size14, which fits almost exactly like an adult size xs for most things, and is so much cheaper, so I'm an especially happy camper! Love this outfit, and I was LOLing at "Adult World" forever!

  3. I love the crewcuts clothes! I just hate that my daughter had already grown up when they started that line because she would have worn a tulle skirt so many times! Sometimes we will walk through crewcuts or gap kids and I will point out the clothes she would be wearing now if only she were littler! The tulle skirt ALWAYS gets picked!

  5. I never seem to comment nearly enough on your blog, but I do read it every single day and I just absolutely love your style. You have a way of pulling together pieces and just making them fun and quirky, which is how I hope my own style is. I have taken a ton of inspiration from you, and just wanted you to know that!

  6. I must take a look through Crewcuts now - typically I've only perused their jewelry but if they are offering up some larger sizing, hm ...

You look sophisticated yet playful today. That shirt rocks and I can envision you wearing it a million different ways. And major props to your hair today - it looks great (knuckle knock).

  7. You have such great style. I totally wish I could pull off some of those outfits...but I totally can't :( They look so great on you, you create/have your own style and that's what I totally love. It inspires me to try and play with what I have in my closet (or go shop some more lol)

  13. Oh yes, I'm definitely so, so jealous of the crewcuts line. I wish they would make the line available in adult sizes. I hope it works out for you. Good luck!

  14. I just bought this cardi for my 6 year old b/c I couldn't stop looking at it! It is a bit longer (like a boyfriend cardi), so it very well could fit a grown up. Wish I'd thought of it b/c I wear xs at J.crew, too. I did a post on this cardi at my blog: todayandtomorrowday.blogspot.com

  16. Oh the shirt looks perfect on you, and taps into the masculine/feminine theme. And oh, crewcuts slays me with the intensely awesome styling!! If you did do "grown up" versions of some outfits, I'd looooove to see them.

  19. The J. Crew near my house has a small Crewcuts attached and whenever I visit, I swoon over every single piece! When we were younger, I used to swipe my little bros clothes all the time. But now that he's a lumbering 16-year-old (sniffle, sniffle!) I'd drown in anything from his closet. Your bros shirt looks great!!

  20. Love the zebra-print cardigan! I'm not an "animal print" person at all, but when done so literally? Fantastic. The borrowed shirt looks great with the pencil skirt (such a great skirt!).

  22. Hi

I really have to say, reading this post was like discovering a new store I have always been dying to shop from! lol

I absolutely adore almost all the cute little outfits they have on the little girls but it never occurred to me to try ordering something for myself. I have a 1 and half yr old but she can't fit into their stuff yet.

I'm smallish on my upper body as well , between a 0-2, so hopefully I may be able to score something.
One particular fave of mine was this tee worn over this shirt - links below:

  25. oh how we would love to be able to fit into crewcuts line. that look with the chambray shirt is one of our favorites. we are including in a story we are putting up this week! hope the sweater fits!

  26. I bought that zebra sweater and I got it last week. I'm pretty small and the 12 was a little tight on the shoulders but fit okay elsewhere. Did you receive yours yet? I also got the size 14 pattycake shirt. If it fits me, great, it's a bit cheaper so I'll take it!

Too bad all the Stella McCartney at Gapkids are sold out in larger sizes on line.
