borrowed too much from the boys

Who gets a cold in the middle of summer? THIS GIRL! Do I get a prize? A box of Kleenex, mayhaps? A bottle of Nyquil with a bendy straw in it? Because that's what I need right now.

Moving on...

shirt, j.crew
jacket, gap kids
jeans, j.crew outlet
sandals, aldo
men's belt, ae
bracelet, kate spade
ring, f21

This was thrown together at the last possible second. I have a bad habit of sleeping through my alarm, which I pay dearly for whenever I'm trying to get dressed because I can think is "jeans! sandals! shirt! jacket! DONE!" without thinking that maybe these jeans with those sandals make me look shorter than I already am, or that maybe a men's-style shirt paired with a boy's-style jacket might need a touch more femininity to balance it all out.

Lesson learned: Wake up on time and get dressed thoughtfully.

SERIOUSLY, AM I EVEN TRYING ANYMORE?

This is the second day I've experienced feeling less-than-inspired. Sometimes I just get so frustrated standing in my closet completely clueless and staring blankly at my clothes. It's at those moments when I guess the vexation gets the better of me and I end up choosing a plaid shirt through which to channel my grunge-caliber angst.

Don't look at me with those shocked, judgmental (and incredibly dreamy) eyes, Chris Cornell. Just because you happen to be rocking the acoustic guitar and a sleek, all-black ensemble now doesn't mean that you're free from blame when it comes to my plaid-loving ways.

See? This is the image of cool that was burned into my young, impressionable mind so many years ago. So really, me wearing plaid every time I feel even an iota of hair-bristling frustration is all your fault. And while we're here, I'm going to go ahead and blame the collection of ball-bead chain necklaces that I wore all through my teenage years on you too.

v-neck tee, j.crew
plaid shirt, f21
boy's canvas grunt jacket, gap kids [x]
skinny jeans, gap
red flats, target
stone duchess cocktail ring, j.crew

I guess at least my plaid shirt isn't 3 sizes too big for me.

PS. I can't stay angry at you, Chris Cornell. Let's never fight again.

borrowed from my brother

I'm taking a cue from J.Crew's "borrowed from my brother" theme on Crewcuts and uh, borrowing something from my brother.

Speaking of Crewcuts, am I the only person who is ridiculously jealous of how adorable children's clothing is? Seriously, I wish J.Crew would make grown-up sizes of some of the Girl's items. Sigh. And kids can wear anything and look freakin' amazing. I mean, look at this:

On her: so adorable that I half expect rainbows to shoot out from behind her. On an adult: could potentially make you look criminally insane.

But that doesn't mean an adult couldn't pull off the same elements of this look to make it work in, you know, Adult World (nevermind that that sounds like a sketchy video place). Say, open up the collar of the chambray shirt and extend the bow tie with some silver chains to make it into a bow tie necklace. Then swap the tutu-looking skirt for a full white eyelet or accordion-pleated skirt. Change the shoes to "grown-up" flats, sans strap. Replace the brown leather belt with a wider one. BAM. Grown-up version of this adorable kid's ensemble.

I may entertain the idea of taking Crewcuts looks and making my own "grown-up" versions of them. Anyone on board?

But I do occasionally buy from the Crewcuts line. I'm pretty small on top, so sometimes I can manage to squeeze into their sweaters and tees, which makes me happy, because the girls have awesome sweaters and tees! Here's a purchase that's making it way to me right now:

I love how it's a literal zebra print. So fun! I hope it fits! -crosses fingers-

Wait, so where was I before going off on a Crewcuts tangent? Oh yes, borrowing from my brother. Can you tell what I borrowed?

white cami, cotton on
striped blue shirt, brother's
pleated pencil skirt, anthropologie
wide belt, calvin klein
joley flats, j.crew
faceted glacon bracelet, j.crew [x]

That's right, I borrowed the skirt! Just kidding... it's the shirt, of course! This was part of his old middle school uniform and I snagged it when he outgrew it and my mom was considering tossing it out. Hooray for reusing! I have to admit that me mooching off my brother's clothes is a one-way kind of deal, though. I mean, sure I can shop his closet, but he can't exactly shop mine.

At least, I hope not. He'd look terrible in a pencil skirt.

Happy weekending, everyone!
